The Art (& Design) of Communication via:

__MOVEMENT__

Theo Jansen:
This Dutch inventor creates creature-like sculptures called, "Strandbeests" that seemingly move on their own. Kinetic energy powered by the wind enables them to walk across the beaches of Holland. The mechanics behind these inventions consist of; gossamer wings that flap and pump air into recycled plastic bottles that in turn power the creatures' many spindly legs.

Cocky Eek:
Working with the elements, Cocky Eek explores state of being, lightness and space; following:

Pneumatology - coming from Pneuma (wind, air, breath, spirit and soul).

Using lightweight, stretchy materials, she creates garments which become sculptural when on the body and subjected to wind and light. In essence the pieces become part of the body or an extension of it; creating a 'skin' or built in shell.
With her pursuit at the recreation of spirituality, Cocky Eek's work has so far produced felxible, portable and organic garments which have contorted the body and enabled it to float. This experimentation is why I find her interesting; she works within the boundaries of technology and what is normal, in striving for a 'natural' creation.

"My dream is to be able to create our homes and shelters wherever our heart is, with no fixed form, no clear beginnings or ends, neither spatially, nor temporally. The question guiding my research is: how can we construct our worlds from air, the lightest element around us?"

Hussein Chalayan:
A fashion designer renowned world wide for his innovative use of materials, meticulous pattern cutting and progressive attitude to new technology. He is inspired by architectural theories, science and technolog:

"My work has become more and more cross disciplinary.
the evolution is using other disciplines to express my ideas.
I've had the confidence that I've been able to, kind of
express a world through other mediums. for example
I've been making films in the last 3 to 4 years so that's added
a new dimension to my work."

Animatronic Fashion:

Inspired by celebrity sun worship, Chalayan designed a range of dresses - encrusted with crystals and embedded with laser beams - which produced bold silhouettes and projected light in to the surrounding space from the deflected rays of the lasers. The collection was entitled 'Readings' and was produced in conjunction with a collaboration with Swarovksi; furthering his technological trend.
