Light Distortion

__ Ideas __

REFRACTION  &  DIFFRACTION:
'The transformation of white light in to colour - How rainbows are formed.'

White light shines through a spectrum (most commonly a crystal prism) in a straight line which is then reflected at an angle and fanned outwards at angles, projecting colour. This is how rainbows are formed when the Sun shines through water droplets in the atmosphere.

An artist who works with diffraction and reflection to create colour from light is:

__ ETIENNE REY __

'Diffraction' an installation made of suspended acrylic squares that plays with light, transparencies and reflections to ''Magnify the light'' and reveal colour and space.

'Diffraction- weightless, net stopped in its tracks, displays all colours in the colour wheel. This involves installing resonance phenomena and reflection of light'

Etienne Rey also created pieces using other materials that reflect light such as, metallics. He created an installation piece using CDs:

COLOUR TRANSFORMATION VIA LIGHT ON MATERIALS:

These materials in particular react with light to create different aesthetics when in movement e.g. on the body. Some fashion designers and photographers work with certain materials due to how they look in certain light. Here are some examples which have inspired me, giving me something to consider for my own designs:

Fashion Photographer, Solve Sundsbo, focusses on how light can create atmosphere in an image and transform it

Tom Murno - Fashion photographer
Metallic material reflects light creating white highlights and brightening up the whole image.

Again Tom Gurno captures the shadows on this silk dress, highlighting it's shape and forms; gathering.

THE SUN:

The rays of the Sun which (come in linear form) have an affect on the human body, more so, the skin.
When exposed to Sun for a certain period of time people (depending on their skin type) tan or burn.
When tanning, the skin changes colour and when burnt the skin also changes colour but becomes inflamed and hot too; going red.
Frequent exposure to the Sun is bad for your health and has long term affects on your skin; peeling, wrinkles, dryness and sun spots (which are seen to their full extent under blue UV light).

Sun worshippers have an array of swimming costumes/bikinis to choose from to get the 'prefect tan'. Some designers play with this and create unconventional pieces which deliberately create patches ('tan lines') on the body.

Danielle Scutt is one of those designers who produced this design and similar in her 2008 S/S ready-to-wear collection:

SHADOWS:
'A shadow is an area where direct light cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it. The cross section of a shadow is a two-dimensional silhouette, or reverse projection of the object blocking the light.'

__ How they cast and distort __
These photographs capture how shadows distort original shapes; the dark colour, enlarging, minimizing, stretching, fattening and bending.

__ Silhouette __
These photographs show how shadows create shapes - reminds me of dark coloured stencils/cut outs.

__ How they cast on the body __
These images show how light can work in creating darkness as a form of concealing parts of the body.  The shadows highlight the contours of the body and create shapes.

Fashion Photographer Solve Sundsbo has captured images in the same vain:

These photographs by Solve Sundbso show him working with shadow in the opposite way to the above images. In these images shadow is sparse as light has been used to create a dramatic brightness, highlighting the body.

__ Using shadows as a form of projection __

These images show how Fashion Photographers have used the light as a form of art - By shining light through objects they have managed to cast imagery and patterns of their choice on to the human body, turning the shadows in to the clothes; projected garments.

Once again the Fashion Photographer, Solve Sundsbo has taken photos using this technique; capturing some strong, dramatic prints on the body.
